Bread & Butter Pudding

Bread and Butter Pudding is a traditional South African dessert. Served hot with with golden syrup, jam or honey and a good dollop of fresh cream! Enjoy.


  • 4 x thick slices of white bread with crusts (slightly stale is good)
  • Butter
  • 190 ml currents or 150 ml raisins
  • 2 large eggs
  • 125 ml sugar
  • 1 ml salt
  • 700 ml milk


  1. Thickly butter sliced bread
  2. Place slices with the buttered side down in a greased dish
  3. Sprinkle the raisins on top.
  4. Beat eggs thoroughly and add sugar, salt and milk.
  5. Pour the egg mixture over the bread and allow it to soak for about 30 minutes.
  6. Bake covered for 30 minutes at 160 degrees celcius.
  7. Remove the cover and bake for a further 10 – 15 minutes until golden brown.
  8. Serve hot.
